by Gigi Dumallig

TABUK CITY, Kalinga,Jan. 10(PIA) -- Members of the Youth Community Service Club (YCSC) of Tabuk City are looking forward to a busy 2012 as they are set to implement a line-up of community service activities particularly on protecting the environment.

YCSC President Rosalyn Lao-ang revealed that in their 2012 Action Plan, the group will be implementing year-round their major environmental projects namely, seedling propagation and maintenance of the YCSC Nursery and the Tabuk LGU Nursery; campaign for the Tabuk Solid Waste Management Program through eco-walks or road cleaning; tree-planting projects in support to the national government reforestation programs and local projects in the barangays and schools; and fund raising activities to sustain their projects and various financial needs.

Part of the environmental protection projects she said will be the establishment of YCSC mini nurseries in the seven colleges in the city, school greening program, tree planting during Arbor Day on June 25, and tree planting and community cleaning during the Matagoan Festival celebration in June.

Members she said will also be undergoing leadership trainings set on March and October. They will also hold anti-drug abuse campaign by July, Youth Congress by October or December, and a physical and sports promotion by February with the help of the Samahang Basketbolista ng Pilipinas.

By year-end, the members she said hopes to accomplish more projects as commitment to their “Protect our Environment” advocacy campaign and get support from the community in realizing a more environment friendly and greener Tabuk City.

YCSC organizer and adviser City Councilor Antonio Bakilan expressed appreciation for the support of the members in all the activities saying that they had been giving inspiration to other youth in the communities to become more aware and appreciate the value of the ecosystem.

Their influence in the community he said is manifested with the growing interest of other youth to join the club which has increased from 600 registered members in July to more than 800 by December of 2011.

Since membership has given focus to the colleges, the club is giving consideration to also expand the membership to the high school students to get more support in their campaign.

Aside from environment protection, the club also aims to mold the members to become productive leaders in the future who will be giving more priority in protecting and preserving the environment to economically develop the city as well as province towards its progress. (JDP/GGD- PIA CAR, Kalinga)
