DENR concentrates on greening projects this year

by Peter A. Balocnit

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan. 10(PIA)-- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) concentrates its activities this year on greening projects aimed to restore denuded forests.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Joseph Insigne said with the alarming present situation brought about by disaster and calamities, efforts have to be focused on reforestation.

Lessons from recent flooding that took high toll on lives and widespread destruction on properties and livelihood have pushed us to shift gear on tree planting to prevent further hazard,he said.

Senior Forest Management Officer Noel Barrientos said from the total land area of the province of 311,974 hectares, 112,015 hectares are the remaining forest cover or 41.87% of its total land area.

“And out of the remaining forest cover, only 90,939 hectares are considered virgin forest and the rest are second growth forest or dipterocarp,” he said adding that conserving the remaining forest cover and reforesting denuded areas could save us from disaster.

For 2012, DENR-Kalinga targets to reforest 2,646 hectares and plant 558,000 forest trees. This is aside from fruit bearing trees which will be taken cared of by the Department of Agriculture, Barrientos said adding that he hopes 14,500 seedlings of fruit bearing trees could be planted during the year.

Under Executive Order No. 26 issued by Pres Aquino, DENR, DA, and DAR will manage to establish convergence areas for the national greening program. “These three agencies will help each other produce seedlings and provide livelihood and ancillary services to settlers in convergence areas,” Barrientos said.
