PhilCAT helps curb TB in Ifugao

by Dan B. Codamon

LAGAWE, Ifugao, Jan. 11(PIA) -- The Ifugao Provincial Government through its Provincial Coordinating Committee ((PCC) extended gratitude to the Philippine Council Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) for the financial assistance and support to the province in helping curb the prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB) in the province in the past two years.

PCC Coordinator Estela Nanglegan said that with PhilCAT’s assistance, the PCC was established in 2009 to help reduce the prevalence and mortality of TB by 50% in 2015 and beyond 50% thereafter from a baseline established in 2000 under the National TB Program, which began in Ifugao in 2005 to support the Millennium Development Goals for poverty alleviation.

Since the establishment of the PCC, there was a notable increase in the referral of TB cases for non-National TB Program (NTP) care providers who were engaged in the province-wide Public/Private Mix DOTS initiatives, Nanglengan said.

She said the commitment and dedication of their staff and the PhilCAT was elemental in the development of an efficient system that worked best for both the public health providers and the referring private practitioners.

She said that they have been strictly monitoring the existence of positive TB cases in all the municipalities of the province and the Rural Health Units’ record for people with the disease so they can be treated or acted upon immediately.

As of 2011, the PCC reported that they received and evaluated 81 TB cases of which 68 of them were taken for treatment and 40 for re-treatment. They also received 38 new cases.

Nanglegan, also the NTP coordinator, said she is happy with the increase in the referral system with the support from the private partners and the inter- local health zones agreement of sharing manpower with the local government units (LGUs) which facilitates their work although many LGUs do not have permanent medical technologies.

PhilCAT’s assistance and support ended last December 31, 2011. (JDP/DBC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
