Baguio Botanical Garden undergoes improvement

by Lito Dar

BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 17 (PIA) -- The City Government of Baguio will be pouring in about P10 million to fund development projects inside the Baguio Botanical Garden, one of the tourist attractions in the city.

Baguio city Tourism Officer Benny Alhambra, in an interview, disclosed that construction is now on-going for an amphitheater, a ‘dap-ayan’ area and for the upgrade of the entrance of the Botanical Garden.

He said the amphitheater and dap-ayan will be the performance area inside the park, where they also plan to showcase the different cultures not only here in the city but for the rest of Cordillera as well.

Alhambra bared that the Botanical Garden has been declared as Baguio’s Centennial Park during the city’s 100 years founding anniversary last September 1, 2009, and in line with this, they will also be putting an informational and educational project inside the park which will provide tourists a walk through of the history of Baguio.

Another upcoming development project for the Botanical Garden that Alhambra reported is the revival of the mini-zoo inside the park. “A mini-zoo in the past was another attraction inside the park and there is already a proposal submitted to us by an expert for sustaining and managing the mini-zoo. Proposed entrance for the said mini-zoo will be along South Drive,” he said.

Meanwhile, Alhambra disclosed that this April, the Baguio Botanical Garden will be a part of the venues for the scheduled University Theater Performance of the Art, a project of the national government through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in partnership with the International Performance Theater Association.

“It will be a big (tourism) event for the city as about 1,000 performers are invited to join, and this number still has a tendency to increase once the promotion of the said event commences,” Alhambra said.

As for other tourism update, Alhambra also affirmed that they are now working for the promotion and marketing of Panagbenga 2012 (Baguio Flower Festival) which is set to be open on February 1.

According to Alhambra, infrastructures that will support the safety and security of visitors will be ready by then. In addition, Alhambra also reported that they are now also doing monitoring of the city’s accommodation services and other amenities to ensure the comfort and convenience of visitors coming up for the Panagbenga.
