DSWD-Kalinga explains water, electric services discount for elderly

TABUK, Kalinga, Jan. 20(PIA)--The priviledge of senior citizens for discount from general services utilities is not automatic, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) explained advising senior citizens in the province to apply with the concerned service provider in order to avail such benefit.

Eusebia Haddac of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) explained the five percent discount in the monthly water and electric bills granted to senior citizens is different from the way discounts on medicines and other benefits are granted.

As support, the PSWDO distributed application forms to applicant-beneficiaries for submission to the Kalinga Apayao Electric Cooperative (Kaelco) and Tabuk Waters. Upon approval of the application, senior citizens who are listed as member-consumers enjoy regular 5% discount in their monthly bills.

Entitled senior citizens to the power and water discounts must be listed as member-consumers of both service providers. He must not consume more than 100 kilowatts per month for power and not more than 30 cubic meters for the water to be granted the discount.

If a senior citizen is staying with the family of a member-consumer, the family is not entitled to the benefit, Haddac elaborated.

The water and electric discount is contained in Republic Act 9994, also known as Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.(JDP/LL-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
