Kalinga holds nutrition forum

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan 26 (PIA) -- The Kalinga provincial government ,in partnership with the Department of Health-Cordilera Regional Office (DOH-CAR) is holding a Provincial Nutrition Forum for the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Workers (BHW) in efforts to strengthen nutrition programs in the province.

Provincial Nutritionist Frances Sebastian said the program highlights include presentation of the nutrition situation reports, lectures on the roles of the BNS and BHW in the local nutrition program and the organization of the BNS Kalinga Federation.

Speakers during the conference she said are Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator June Falancy of the National Nutrition Council Regional office (NNC-CAR) who will discuss the Regional Situation and Actions for Nutrition Improvement, and lecture on ‘BNS in the Forefront of Nutrition Agenda’ while DOH-CHD-CAR Health Operations Division Head Dr. Amelita Pangilinan will talk on ‘Community Health Team’ and updates on health programs.

Kalinga Provincial Health Officer and Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Romulo Gaerlan, on the other hand, will present the PHO and nutrition programs while Department of Interior and Llocal Government Dir. Francisco Gamatero will orient the participants on the Roles/Functions of the Local Nutrition Committees. Sebastian updates the group on the Provincial Nutrition Situation.

Regional Nutrition Council Chair and DOH CAR Regional Director Myrna Cabotaje will be joining the group during the open forum while NNC-CAR Kendall Gatan will be facilitating the organization of the Kalinga BNS federation during the congress.

Messages will also be delivered by Kalinga Governor Jocel Baac and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office Digna Dalutag.

After the congress, Sebastian hopes that the BNS and BWH will be armed with more information especially in improving the nutrition and health programs in their area of responsibilities.

The roles of the BNS and BHWs, she said, are vital especially in uplifting the nutritional status of school children in the province where in 2011, based on population all municipalities have still reports of pre-school children with severely and underweight status.

Based on population rate, Pinukpuk has highest status rate with 8.52 percent, followed by Rizal with 8.04 percent, Tanudan has recorded 7.34 percent, Tabuk City is 7.05 percent, Balbalan has 5.80 percent, Pasil is 5.43 percent, Lubuagan with 4.50 percent, and Tinglayan with 3.93 percent.
