PPUR officially one of the 7 New Wonders of Nature

by Victoria Asuncion S. Mendoza

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Jan. 31 (PIA) -- The Puerto Princesa Underground River or the PPUR is now the second official winner of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The confirmation of PPUR was made by Bernard Weber, President of the New 7 Wonders Foundation in a press conference held recently at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City.

Weber said that the participation of President Benigno S. Aquino III in the campaign and promotion for PPUR made a big difference for the country’s official entry to the global search.

Weber was joined in the press conference by Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, who said that the confirmation of PPUR as an official winner is a wonderful news and that this development is an example of how “it’s more fun in the Philippines.”

PPUR is located about 75 kilometers northwest of the center of Puerto Princesa City and boasts of the longest navigable subterranean river estimated at 8.2 kilometers.

It is a designated core area for the Palawan Biosphere Reserve under the Man and Biosphere Program. In recognition of its globally significant natural properties, it was inscribed to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) List of Natural World Heritage Sites. Inscription to the list confirms the exceptional and universal value of the site that deserves to be protected for the benefit of all humanity. (LBR/VSM/PIA-Palawan)
