DA, DSWD launch agri PPP initiative

by Jerome Carlo R. Paunan

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 1 (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and launched the Agrikulturang Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino (PPP) initiative in Catubig province in Northern Samar, an agency statement said.

The DA said the launch followed their partnership sealed by the two agencies in August 2011 on engaging landless farmers in DSWD’s Cash for Work Program in paddy diking.

Such partnership aims to help farmers concerned earn while allowing farms in the area to benefit from the irrigation project.

“From just four hectares of farms being served last August by an irrigation project started 10 years ago, the service area with built-up paddy dikes increased to 303 hectares within less than four months,” DA Secretary Proceso Alcala reported.

Rice paddy diking or "pilapil" construction is an irrigation method used by farmers to retain water in a reservoir next to the paddy fields. This system allows early seedling production and small scale fish farming in an arid environment. (DA/RJB/JCP-PIA NCR)
