NDRRMC on ‘Red Alert’

by Domingo B. Natividad V

QUEZON CITY, Jan 3 (PIA) -- The National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) is now “red alert status” as it monitors the approaching low pressure area (LPA) near Southern Mindanao.

The NDRRMC Update released at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday showed recent report from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) locating the LPA at 600 kilometers Southeast of General Santos City.

Because of this, the NDRRMC has continually informed thru Short Messaging System (SMS) or text messaging and facsimile all regions that will be likely affected on the status of the LPA, its Gale, and Flood Bulletins. Also, these information can be downloaded on its www.ndrrmc.gov.ph , facebook and twitter accounts.

The weather bureau forecasts that in 24 hours Eastern Visayas and Mindanao will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Eastern and Southern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

The rest of Visayas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Northern and Eastern Luzon will be mostly cloudy with light rains while the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains.

Earlier, PAGASA admitted that this LPA may intensify into a tropical depression – the first this year, if ever – and will be called “Ambo”. (RJB/ DBNV/ PIA-NCR)
