Strike incidence down by 75%

by Domingo B. Natividad V

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 4 (PIA) -- Industrial peace in the country further improved in 2011 as only two major strikes were recorded during the entire year, compared to eight (8) in 2010 -- a 75 percent decline.

These two strikes in 2011 were immediately resolved at the National Reconciliation and Mediation Board, according to Labor and Employment Spokesperson Nicon Fameronag during the Communication and News Exchange (CNEX) forum held at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Wednesday.

This will benefit the economic sector as “industrial peace and harmonious relations is a necessity for the investors to come into the Philippines,” he said.

He said DOLE has devised a reform program called Single Entry Approach (SEnA) that proved to be an effective tool in speeding the process of arbitration, reconciliation, and mediation mechanism. This program, he said, is also instrumental in the increase of the settlement rate of labor cases filed at DOLE.

SEnA is installed in every regional and field offices of DOLE, and employs “the ASEAN way of not being confrontational” in conciliating and mediating labor cases.

For 2011, he said, DOLE has a “96 percent resolution rate” on labor disputes. Earlier, DOLE figures showed that from January to November 2011 alone, it achieved a disposition rate of 94 percent with 30,614 requests for assistance (RFAs).

CNEX is sponsored by the Presidential Communication Operations Office (PCOO), PIA, Philippine News Agency (PNA) and Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS), and PTV4. (RJB/ DBNV/ PIA-NCR)
