Third Haydee Yorac lecture series held

by Domingo B. Natividad V

QUEZON CITY, Jan 13 (PIA) -- Stakeholders of the Philippine anti-corruption measure and law have attended the 3rd Haydee Yorac Commemorative lecture series on Wednesday at the EDSA Shangri-La, featuring the talk of United Kingdom (UK) Judge Michael Hopmeier on Asset Recovery as an anti-corruption tool.

Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) Commissioner Maita Chan-Gonzaga, in an interview with PIA-NCR, said this is third of the commemorative lecture-series on anti-corruption that her office has sponsored. The first lecture featured an international expert based in Hong Kong, while the second event had Budget Secretary Florencio Abad talk on the Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Framework of the Aquino administration.

Chan-Gonzaga explained that what PCGG, as program sponsor, is trying to achieve, “is to listen to the various experts talk about the anti-corruption measures in their own jurisdiction.” She said her office is also interested with “what recommendation they proffer to the Philippine anti-corruption system – all with the objective of improving the mechanisms in place that we have currently.”

Aside from this, she said the PCGG has organized these forums “not only to hear the experts talk but also to allow the participants to think about possible reforms.”

For this event, the PCGG has partnered with the UK government. This, as the issue on corruption has become “an international fight now.” Hence, “we really need to cooperate with other countries.”

Both UK and the Philippines will also co-chair the Open Government Partnership (OGP) come September 2012. She said this was among the reasons why, “President Benigno S. Aquino went to the United States of America in September of 2011 and met US President Barack Obama.”

Chan-Gonzaga said the idea of the OGP, “is to be able to network and share experiences, best practices in the hope that if there are reforms needed legislatively as well as judicially, we are able to give a platform for the discussion.”

The OGP is an important networking among states, she said, composed of eight founding members. “The Philippines is one of its founding-members,” she added. (RJB/DBNV-PIA-NCR)
