Eco-driving training for QC tricycle drivers

QUEZON CITY, Jan 13 (PIA) -- The Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department (EPWMD) will be conducting an Eco-Driving Training with the theme, "Hangin ay Buhay: Gabay sa Malinis at Maunlad na Pamamasada," on January 20, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Philippines Social Science Auditorium along Commonwealth Avenue.

The objective of the training is to capacitate the Quezon City Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (QC-TODA) about the impact of good driving behavior and proper engine maintenance that will result to reduced emissions pursuant to the Clean Air Act, reduced maintenance cost, and increased fuel saving, among others.

The training will be conducted in partnership with the Department of Public Order and Safety-Tricycle Regulatory Unit (DPOS-TRU), the Partnership for Clean Air (PCA) and CAL-Asia. The PCA is a multi-sector network in the Philippines with organized members from government, civil society, academic institutions and private sector that promotes air quality management as a multi-stakeholder effort in the Philippines

The activity will be conducted as part of the 12 Point Agenda under the Clean Air Compliance Assistance Program (CACAP) to strengthen the air quality management capacity of Quezon City thru partnerships, capacity building, legislative measures and enforcement strategy.

Eco-driving is a strategy to reduce emissions from road fleets. It is a behavioral change approach resulting in reduced emissions from transport. Eco-driving could potentially help the driver reduce fuel consumption by 5-20 percent according to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Clean Fleet Management Toolkit (http://www.unep.org/tnt-unep/toolkit/).

Eco-driving is attractive to fleet managers because it is low-cost while yielding immediate fuel saving and other benefits such as better vehicle performance, lower accident rates, lower downtime, and reduced maintenance cost. Eco-driving as a strategy is especially helpful to fuel-intensive business such as the public transport sector.

This training hopes to increase their understanding about the health impact of air pollution and make them aware of the various technology solutions available in the market, which help reduce emissions pursuant to the Clean Air Act,increase vehicle efficienty, and lower fuel consumption.
