Hong Kong trip up for grabs for Pasay taxpayers

by Jerome Carlo R. Paunan

PASAY CITY, Jan. 18 (PIA) -- The local government is giving away free trip to Hong Kong and other valuable prizes to entice real property taxpayers and business owners to pay their obligations on time, a statement said Wednesday.

According to Mayor Antonino Calixto Jr. said prizes form part of the city's "Towards Change Tax Incentives Promo," which is open to all Pasay City taxpayers who have settled their obligations beginning January 2, 2012 until December 31, 2012.

Every transaction will correspond to one raffle ticket that would allow our taxpayers a chance to win a trip to Hong Kong and other major prizes, tax free, Calixto said, adding that when you pay your taxes in Pasay City you don’t simply fulfill your responsibility to your country but win prizes.

The mayor said this innovative program is meant to encourage taxpayers to pay their realty and business taxes to support the city’s programs and projects and strengthen the delivery of basic services to the people.

“We’re taking a different approach in the sense that instead of penalizing our taxpayers for their tax deficiencies, we would rather look for new ways to increase our collection,” he said.

Pasay’s tax incentive promo, initiated by City Treasurer Noli Leycano, is the first and only such promotion in Metro Manila. Leycano used this kind of method when he was still the Provincial Treasurer of Laguna, which resulted in prompt and efficient collection of local taxes in that province.

“I encourage all our taxpayers to avail of this promotion because increasing our collection would directly return to them in the form of infrastructure health and education, and nutrition projects. In Pasay, buwis ng Pasayeno, nakikita sa proyekto (In Pasay, tax of Pasayeno can be seen in projects),” Calixto added.

Under the tax incentive promo, tax payments amounting to P50,000 and above will give the taxpayer a chance to win P100,000 for the 1st prize; P50,000 for 2nd; and P30,000 for 3rd.

On the other hand, tax payments below P50,000 will give the taxpayer a chance to win an all expenses paid trip to Hong Kong for two or its cash equivalent (1st Prize), Tax Credit to Business or Real Property owned by the winner amounting to P25,000 (2nd Prize) and Tax Credit in the amount of P15,000 (3rd Prize).

Calixto said that the promo was also meant to increase the tax awareness of taxpayers as it will be a good break from the usual sale through public auction of delinquent properties.

He added that with intensified collection of taxes, both the city government and taxpayers stand to gain.

A special draw for the whole year of real property tax / business tax payment for CY 2012, advance payment included, will be held on January 23, 2012 at the City Treasurer’s Office. (PIO/RJB/JCP-PIA NCR)
