Pasay City offers cash assistance to informal settlers for ‘Balik Probinsiya’

PASAY CITY, January 21 (PIA) -- The Pasay City government is taking a new and innovative approach under its Balik Probinsiya Program where informal settlers will be given financial assistance to encourage them to return to their home provinces.

“The cash assistance will be given to the families of informal settlers in Pasay City to help them rebuild their lives in their home provinces. It’s a start-up fund that they can use to rebuild their lives in the provinces where cost of living is much cheaper,” Pasay City Mayor Calixto said.

Under the Balik Probinsya Program, qualified informal settlers will be given P25,000.00 financial assistance to help their relocation.

Calixto signed Executive Order No. 45, Series of 2011 last November 3, 2011, which directs the Pasay City Urban Development and Housing Office to initiate the screening of families willing to relocate. The funds shall be taken from the P4 million allocation for the said program.

The government’s priority are the informal settlers living along esteros and waterways, railroad tracks, and along rivers which has been classified as “danger areas” during typhoons and weather disturbances.

“Right now, our housing office is already screening many families. We expect to have about a hundred beneficiary-families by the end of first quarter of this year. We are encouraged by the results so far and we plan to sustain this activity in the long run,” he explained.

“We are intent on improving the quality of life in Pasay. To do this, we need to directly address the issue of informal settlers in the city,” Calixto noted. (RJB/AKG-PIA-NCR/Pasay City PIO)
