Pogo Grande’s high noon firecracker blast welcomes 2012

by Venus H. Sarmiento

DAGUPAN CITY, Jan. 01 (PIA) -- At least 90 thousand triangle-rapids firecrackers were lit up in the annual high noon new year blast today in barangay Pogo Grande, this city, producing non-stop noise to welcome year 2012.

The firecracker spectacle made use of firecrackers strewn together and hung in the street stretching from the bridge until the barangay intersection, which is about 100 meters long.

The first firecracker was lit at the stroke of 12 noon of January 1 and all the rest went popping. It is common folk belief that the loud crackling noise will drive away evil and bad luck for the coming year.

Councilor Myrna Esteves, who is the acting barangay captain today, said most of the firecrackers were donated by ‘balikbayans’ who hail from Pogo Grande. When summed up, the firecrackers amount to P20,000, she said.

“Karamihan, donasyon ng mga balikbayan kasi alam nila ang tradisyon na ito na kilala na sa maraming lugar,” Esteves said.

This year, the balikbayans particularly the Galvan clan, spearheaded the lighting of the firecrackers. The snaking line of firecrackers produced ear-crackling noise that lasted for about 15 minutes.

Pogo Grande’s tradition started more than two decades ago with the simultaneous lighting of just a few firecrackers that were not sold. Owing to its uniqueness, supporters of the revelry grew and many promised to donate.

The council ensured the presence of a fire truck, ambulance and the police and security forces during the occasion. The road was also closed to traffic. No untoward incident was listed during the revelry.

Spectators from all over the city come to watch the celebration every year dubbed ‘Balon Kaaguan’ or New Noon.(ANL/VHS-PIA 1 Pangasinan)
