First ever “Kilawen” festival launched in La Union

by Monette H. Herrera

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Jan. 02 (PIA) -- The Local Government Unit of Agoo, La Union held its first ever ‘Kilawen’ festival last Dec. 28 at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University sport complex to showcase the culture and character of the Ilocanos as ‘kilawen ‘serves as their favorite dish in every season.

According to Congressman Eufranio Eriguel of the second district of La Union, the activity was meant to give thanks to God and the community for all the blessings received by the townspeople of Agoo during the year 2011.

“It is also an event to usher the New Year with hope and prayer for greater blessings from the Almighty God despite the inevitable challenges of the future” Eriguel said.

On the other hand, Agoo Mayor Sandra Eriguel, wife of the congressman, said this feast is intended to let everyone feel the spirit of communal unity and togetherness as one town with a taste of good food such as the kilawen of the region and the country.

Kilawen is an Iluko word which means a delicacy made up of raw meat or fish.

Moreover, at least 22 kilawen dishes were prepared and served free to the public during the celebration in cooperation with the various social, academic and civic organizations.

Among the kilawen presented includes ‘ata-ata’, a raw beef mixed with onion, salt and spicy juice from cow’s innards; pork kilawen, tuna, tanigue(Tangigue) and other sea foods and vegetables. (ANL/MHH/Erwin G Beleo-PIA 1 La Union)
