Firecracker and stray bullet victims in Ilocos Sur rise to 57

VIGAN CITY, Jan. 4 (PIA) -- The victims of firecrackers and stray bullets during the New Year’s revelry in the province rose to 57, according to reports from the Provincial Health and Technology Office (PHTO) here.

Yesterday, a total of eight victims of stray bullets and 49 injuries on firecracker-related incidents were recorded.

Of the 49 victims of firecracker–related incidents, 44 were minor injuries or without amputation, 3 eye injuries; and 2 injuries with amputation.

The eight victims of stray bullets were from the towns of Sinait (1); Bantay (2); Narvacan (1); Magsingal (1); and Sta. Catalina (1); and the cities of Vigan (1) and Candon (1).

For victims of firecracker related incidents: Sinait – 1 minor injury and 1 injury with amputation; Vigan City – 4 and 1 eye injury; Bantay – 3; Narvacan – 3; Magsingal – 2, Candon City – 3 and 1 injury with amputation; Cervantes – 1 eye injury; San Vicente – 1 eye injury; Sta. Catalina – 5; Caoayan – 1; San Juan – 1; Cabugao – 1; Sto. Domingo – 7; Tagudin – 2; Santa – 1; Lidlidda – 1; Sta. Cruz – 5; Sta. Maria – 5; Santiago – 1; Suyo – 1; Burgos – 1.

It was reported that most of the victims were already out of the hospital while the others remain confined for their immediate recovery.

PHTO Coordinator Dave Zaragoza said that no death was reported during the New Year’s celebration in the province.

However, he noted that there was a remarkable increase on victims of stray bullets or gunshot wounds with eight this year compared to only two last year. The victim on injury with amputation increased from two victims this year to only one victim last year.

Victims on eye injury also increased from three victims this year to only 1 last year. In all, however, the victims on firecracker–related incidents decreased this year with 49 victims compared to 64 last year. (ANL/FGL-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)
