K to 12 starts this June 2012

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Jan. 21 (PIA) –- The Kindergarten plus 12 years (K to 12) education curriculum will be implemented in school year 2012 – 2013 as confirmed by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Dr. Yolanda Quijano , DepEd undersecretary, said the government aims to make students holistically developed and prepared for the 21st century through the K12 program .

The curriculum dictates that Grade One (1) pupils next school year will be the first set of students who shall have gone through the K to 12 basic education program while the first year high school students next year will be the first set of students to go to Grade 11. ”That’s final, no more turning back,” Quijano said.

She said Deped aims to make students masters and experts in their chosen fields before they enter college.

“We like our students to master basic skills in English, Science and Math including advance fields if they want to go to college. That’s what we want to do, “ she added.

Quijano said next school year will be a very bus year for DepEd as kindergarten will also be a part of the elementary curriculum.

The Kindergarten Bill has been approved in the Congress and the Senate but is still awaiting for the signature of the President. The offering of kindergarten next school year will be universal, she said.

”We want all five year old children to report to school,” Quijano said adding there are at present 20,000 schools offering kindergarten education.

Quijano advised the private and public school teachers who attended the three-day K to 12 international conference held in Linagyen town Thursday, to look at the better side of the added curriculum before reacting negatively. “Look at the new hope and new development for our students instead,” she advised.

The K+12 basic education program, which aims to expand the basic education years from 10 to 12 to make Filipino schools at par with international standards, is managed by a steering committee headed by DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro and co-chaired by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Technical Education Skills Development Authority.
