De Yro TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, January 30 (PIA) -- Dr. Evelyn Ame, Chief of the Fisheries Resources Management Division of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said they are still waiting for the other municipalities to submit local ordinances for the protection of ludong (Cestraeus plicatilis) before they could come up with Fisheries Agricultural Order (FAO). Ame said seven municipalities in the region have not yet submitted their resolutions to the agency. “These ordinances are needed as support document to the planned FAO,” she added. Ame said BFAR has also started installing safety measures such as the establishments of quarantine checkpoints, particularly at Sta. Praxedes, Cagayan. “Ludong has become a symbol of conservation for the region,” Ame said. Since the launching of a Oplan Sagip Ludong project of the agency, BFAR and the Philippine Information Agency Region 2 have conducted a massive and aggressive information and educational campaign in municipalities where the ludong passes during its spawning run. The IECs has resulted to the promulgation of local ordinances to protect and conserve ludong. Meanwhile, BFAR Assistant Regional Director Milagros Morales said at least three two-months old ludong are now in captivity at the ludong research laboratory at the Regional Fishermen’s Training Center (RFTC) in Aparri.
