ILOILO CITY, Jan. 2 (PIA) –- The town of Buenavista in Guimaras has set its annual festivity called “Palayag Buenavista 2012” from January 6-15.

This year’s celebration, according to Mayor Samuel T. Gumarin, highlights the 104th founding anniversary of the municipality, bannered by the theme “Maghilu-ugyon sa Masanag nga Palaabuton(Unite for a Brighter Future)."

Buenavista Tourism staff Teresa Garque said “Palayag” is already on its fifth year, held in January of every year, focusing on the rich cultural, historical, livelihood and lifestyle of the people.

Gumarin said the local government would like to contribute to the development of the tourism industry of the region and the country on the whole, through the holding of “Palayag Buenavista."

“We hope that this festivity will pave the way for a brighter future for our town and people,” Gumarin added.

The name “Buenavista” means good view and the town is the oldest among the municipalities in Guimaras, located at the northern tip of the province.

It is composed of 36 barangays and 281 sitios, endowed with scenic spots, caves, beaches and historical landmarks that attract tourists.

Garque said the town is enjoying fine weather from December to April, which favors a lot of outdoor activities and “Palayag” is one of these.

The 10-day celebration will kick-off with “Palayag Pa-Buenavista on January 6, where sailboats with colorful “layag” will be sailing from Iloilo wharf, crossing the Guimaras Strait, to McArthur Wharf, in Sto. Rosario, Buenavista.

The series of activities include Palayag Pa-Buenavista, Motorcade/Caravan, Agro-Industrial Fair, Food Festival, Photo and Painting Exhibits, Sinadya sa Plaza (Nightly Shows), Layag Making Contest, Farmers’ Day, Cultural Presentations, Grand Parade, Street Dancing Competitions, Fireworks and Sports, and the Coronation of Mutya ng Buenavista.

Garque said the activities are so planned that the skills, talents and expertise of the Buenavistahanons are showcased and acknowledged, with participation of people from all walks of life.

“Palayag Buenavista 2012” is also jointly spearheaded by the municipal officials and the Buenavista Cultural Heritage and Civic Association, Inc. headed by Neptune H. Pittman. (JCM/ESS/PIA-Iloilo)
