Establishments along Iloilo River urged to comply with Clean Water Act

by Lilibeth A. French

ILOILO CITY, January 2 (PIA) -- The Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 6 has urged establishments along the Iloilo River to strictly comply with the provisions of Republic Act 9275 or the Clean Water Act of 2004.

DENR 6-EMB recently reminded owners/operators of restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, recreational centers and other firms that release 30 cubic meters of waste water per day along the Iloilo River to secure their discharge permit.

The Clean Water Act requires owners and operators of facilities that discharge wastewater to secure a discharge permit and to construct or upgrade efficient wastewater treatment facilities in compliance with the effluent standards and as part of its implementing rules and regulations.

DENR-EMB said the full implementation of WasteWater Charge System will start this 2012. The payment for water pollution discharge shall be based on per kilogram of priority pollutant parameters being discharged into water body or land such as bio-chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solid, etc.

The more discharge of pollutant by one establishment, the higher its payment under the said system.

“The call for change and betterment of our environment does not only fall on the shoulders of those who are in government, but also goes out to every Ilonggo who wants change and betterment in our environment,” said DENR 6 EMB in a press report as it calls for support of Ilonggos in making Iloilo River clean and beneficial.

Inquiries as to permit requirements and compliance with the Effluent Standards may be coursed through the Pollution Control Division of the EMB of DENR at tel. no. (033) 337-9801 or Telefax No. (0330 509-9133. (JCM/LAF/PIA6)
