News feature: Bacoleńos holds 'Countdown to a Great Year'

BACOLOD CITY, January 3 (PIA6) -- Seconds before midnight last December 31, 2011, City Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia led Bacolodnons to a countdown aptly titled “Countdown to a Great Year”, united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

At exactly midnight on Jan. 1, 2012, an impressive display of fireworks lit up the Bacolod Skyline with the Bacolod City Government Center Building as the focal point. Throngs of revelers lined the peripheries of the grounds fronting the government center to ring in the New Year with the spectacular fireworks display that lasted for 30 minutes.

Revelers began to gather at the government center grounds in the late afternoon on New Year's Eve, December 31. At 6:00 p.m., the government center’s facade was alight with radiant colors during the “Lights On” signalling the kick-off of the celebration.

The performances of some local talents like the Fire Dancers, MassKara Dancers, Elvis Group, and Statue Dancers, all accompanied by the Drum Beaters, provided unique and wholesome entertainment to the crowd’s delight.

A dance showdown participated in by some of Bacolod’s dance groups produced a higher energy level as the evening’s activities progressed. Minutes before midnight, a “Light Show” was presented displaying a tapestry of changing seamlessly interwoven dazzling color patterns accompanied by a medley of songs to herald the countdown.

The countdown is the brainchild of Mayor Leonardia.

Every year as the clock nears midnight on December 31, the world holds its breath and cheers as the clocks strikes twelve.

Countdowns have been staged in two separate locations in Manila such as The Fort, and Mall of Asia where thousands of Filipinos have flocked to witness the New Year’s countdown and the great fireworks display.

In the local scene, the New Year’s countdown also hopes to become another event that will further boost Bacolod’s tourism industry.

Mayor Bing was elated by the success achieved by the first New Year eve’s countdown.

“This celebration will surely boost further our tourism, and I am glad that we were able to make the first step for after all, a journey to a thousand miles starts with a single step,” he said.

This event further fosters public-private partnership as exemplified by the MassKara Festival and the Bacolaodiat- Chinese New Year celebration in Bacolod.(A.P./PIO-PIA6-LOL/JCM)
