PRO-6 taps 28,000 BPATs for peace and order

by Elsa S. Subong

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA6) -- There are 28,158 registered members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATs) in Western Visayas to help maintain peace and order, according to Police Regional Office-6 (PRO-6).

In his New Year’s message, PRO-6 Director P/Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol, Jr. said he is banking on the full operationalization of the BPATs in the 4,051 barangays in the region.

Querol said that 66.82 percent of these barangays have organized their BPATs.

With this number, Querol said, he is convinced that a formidable link has already been established with the peace-loving Ilonggos, who have volunteered their time, expertise and resources to make their respective communities a safe place to live in, to invest and do business.

The BPAT is Querol’s brainchild, considered as a unique version of community policing, as an approach that empowers the community to take responsibility for all their community affairs towards peace, order and development.

He said that the PRO-6 can succeed in this with the support of the local leaders and their stakeholders.

“We will pursue a stronger police-community partnership in 2012, and lobby more with the local leaders to support this project to full implementation,” Querol said. (JCM/PRO-6/ESS/PIA-Iloilo)
