Kalibo’s Ati-atihan celeb proves there’s more fun in the Philippines – solon

KALIBO, Aklan, Jan. 13 (PIA6) -- Kalibo’s merry celebration of the Sto. Nino Ati-atihan Festivals shows that there is more fun in the Philippines, according to Cong. Florencio T. Miraflores of the lone district of Aklan.

Miraflores issued this statement in reference to the Department of Tourism’s newest campaign to attract more tourists to the country using the message, “It’s more fun in the Philippines.”

Miraflores was one of the guests who witnessed the Higante contest and Parade of Aklan Festivals sponsored by the provincial government of Aklan, one of the highlights of the week-long Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-atihan Festival held from Jan. 9-16.

“The new tourism campaign of the government will encourage more tourists to visit the country, especially here in Aklan. With the cooperation and unity of our 17 towns, we will lead the tourism campaign of our country,” Miraflores told the crowd who came to witness the twin events at the Pastrana Park.

In his message, Miraflores lauded Kalibo officials as well as the organizers led by the Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-atihan Festival Incorporated (KASAFI), headed by former Kalibo SB Member Albert Menez.

As sponsor of the Higante Contest and Parade of Aklan Festivals, the provincial government under Governor Carlito S. Marquez provided the prizes of the winning entries.

Winners in the Higante Contest included Kalibo, with its “Mulawin” entry, received P40,000. Malinao, with its “Maria Makiling” entry, which placed second, won P35,000 while the “Panday” entry of Libacao town placed third and won P30,000.

For the Festivals Contest, Banga’s “Sagibin Festival,” represented by Tribu Tawo-tawo of the Aguinaldo T. Repiedad Integrated School (ATRIS), placed first, winning P10,000. Lezo’s “Bayangan Festival,” got the second place with P7,000 and Nabas’ “Bariw Festival” made it to the third place with P5,000.

For the Balik-Higante Contest, Malinao’s entry, Pacman, placed first, winning P10,000. Balete’s Tagapalhi got the second place with P7,000. Super Inday of Tangalan, placed third, winning P5,000.

A consolation prize of P1,000 under the category, went to the Ati, Unga ni Maniwangtiwang entry.

Meanwhile, overwhelmed by the participation of the different municipalities, Governor Marquez promised the participants that next year, the provincial government will be doubling its subsidy to the contest participants from the different municipalities. (JC/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
