DA encourages mechanization to increase productivity

BACOLOD CITY, Jan. 17 (PIA6) -- About 30 farmers from Bacolod City attended a lecture on the mechanization scheme given by the Department of Agriculture to maximize local rice farming productivity.

Bacolod City Agriculture Office Head Atty. Goldwyn Nifras lead the 30 farmers of Bacolod as they welcomed two officials from the DA at the City’s Agriculture Demo Farm facility in Barangay Alijis for a Philippine Mechanization lecture.

Cesar Balajadia, DA Research Specialist assigned in Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization, and Engineer Romar Areno, DA region 6 coordinator, discussed the 85/15 percent sharing scheme of the Agriculture Department’s and farmers as members of the Highly Urbanized City Agricultural and Fisheries Council or HUCAFC.

Balajadia and Areno said the project will be concentrated on mechanization mainly to improve rice post harvest production, with the DA providing 85 percent and the farmers furnishing the 15 percent financial counterpart through farmers’ organizations.

City coordinator Arturo Reyes revealed that a P1 million budget was already approved for mechanization by the City Sanggunian for mechanization with the proposal made by then Councilor Alex Paglumotan for the 2011 to 2016.

Balajadia expressed optimism that HUCAFC members could enjoy the Agri Pinoy Philmech privilege by the middle of 2012. Reyes also expressed a similar view, following the P1 million support endorsed by City Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Hand tractors, threshers, tillers, rice mills, flat bed dryers are some of the machines needed for the rice sufficiency thrust of the Agriculture Department.*(JCM/EAD-PIA6/CMO Negros Occidental)
