Iloilo gov assures all-out support to city's religious, cultural festival

ILOILO CITY, Jan 23 (PIA) -- The efficacy of the world renowned Dinagyang Festival’s as a tool for economic development of the province and city of Iloilo is laudable said Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. recently as he assured continued support to the annual religious-cultural festival.

“Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has shown the kind of leadership that does not only bring color , fame and development , but he has likewise set the tone of unity in the province and city of Iloilo,” Defensor said during the height of the Dinagyang’s celebration.

He said that the everyone in Iloilo must be proud of this “Dinagyang “ festival, because “it has solidified the Ilonggos’ identity world-wide”.

“If you happen to go places outside the country and you mention the word “Dinagyang”, the people of that particular place will surely know that you are from Iloilo, because Iloilo is now associated with the word Dinagyang,” Defensor said.

Defensor in assuring the provincial government’s support to the city’s annual festival said “we shall continue to purse this tradition because it has brought color, fame and glory to both the province and city of Iloilo all over the world.

Dinagyang festival, held January 20-22 this year, evolved from the veneration of Sto. Nino in 1968 when Fr. Sulpicio Enderes, OSA brought a replica of the image of Sr. Santo Niño de Cebu to the San Jose Parish Church in Iloilo City, until the street dancing and Ati-ati and Mardi-gras competions have been infused to make a distinction from other festivals in the country.

From then on, the streets of Iloilo are filled with merrymakers and revelers, as the Ilonggos celebrate the annual festivity which is preceded by a nine-day novena to Sto. Nino highlighted by a fluvial procession on Friday, and culminated with the Kasadyahan and Ati-ati competitions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Meanwhile, Deputy presidential spokesman Abigial Valte said in a Malacanang press report that the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) launched their Convergence on Tourism Infrastructure Program aimed at coordinating support for tourism-related businesses in local communities.

The program also forged tie ups between the two departments in constructing the roads throughout the Philippines to reach the country’s tourist sites, Valte said as she emphasized that this is in preparation for the influx of 10 million foreign visitors targeted by the government by 2016, as well as ensuring that inclusive growth will redound to the marginalized.
