DOE envisions E-trike to become 'Rural Utility Vehicle'

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 24 (PIA6) -- If there is an SUV or sports utility vehicle, there will also be the RUV or “rural utility vehicle” that will soon be in Philippine towns and villages in the country, with the proposed wide use of electric tricycles.

Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said the E-Trike Project of the agency is aimed at making tricycles an environment-friendly transport system in the country.

To push for this, the DOE has launched the E-trike Design Contest which according to Almendras, will bring out the creativity among Filipinos, which will ultimately spark the beginning of the “Rural Utility Vehicle” since tricycles remain the primary vehicle of the province.

The design contest aims to explore possible designs which can be used by the DOE in the promotion of the E-trike.

Almendras also said that there are already foreign investors who have expressed interest to assist in the production of winning E-trike designs.

The DOE will likewise hold bidding for companies interested in the production of the chosen E-trike designs.

The DOE chief said under the proposed project, tricycle drivers will own the E-trikes they drive after five years through amortization rather than paying boundaries to operators.

Meanwhile, the E-trike design contest is on-going, and all interested parties can go to the following websites: www.doe.gov.ph or www.pia.gov.ph for guidelines including the downloading of the official Registration Form.

The theme of the contest is “Bright Now! Do Right. Be Bright. Go E-trike!”

The basic design should depict a three-wheeled electric vehicle, capable of accommodating six passengers, show originality and creativity, safety and functionality, and ease and comfort for passengers. (JCM/ESS/PIA-Iloilo)
