The BacoLaodiat Festival: A promising tourism event

by Easter Anne D. Doza

BACOLOD CITY, Jan. 24 (PIA) -- The BacoLaodiat Festival promises to be the next tourism event in the city.

The Tourism Strip at Lacson Street was turned into a little China town with Chinese lanterns lining up the streets illuminating the kiosks and stages for the three day event from January 20-22 while the New Government Center drew its biggest crowd ever for the culmination activities of the festival on January 23.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia in his message during the Cultural Show told the crowd of mostly Filipino-Chinese that the festival has become another tourist attraction for the city.

“I am happy that the Filipino-Chinese community has embraced the idea of celebrating the Chinese New Year and it has become bigger since 2006,” Leonardia said.

BacoLaodiat Festival Chair Leonito Lopue said that the Year of the Dragon is a challenging year but we should have a majestic spirit to continue and thrive on challenges.

Meanwhile, the grounds of the New Government Center was sprawling with festival goers who wanted to witness the culmination night of the four-day festival.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson during the awarding ceremonies said that the idea of the Chinese New Year celebration has transformed from a little bit of a parade seven years ago to a celebration where the crowd at Lacson Street is comparable already to the crowd that gathered during the Masskara Festival.

Sayson commended the barangays and their officials for their contingents who participated in the Lantern Street Dance Competition

The festival is timely with the signing of an ordinance creating the Bacolod Chinatown Center which is another public-private endeavor of the local government of Bacolod.*(EAD-PIA6/Negros Occidental)
