NFA calls on Aklan's socio-civic organizations to utilize I-Rice

By Venus G. Villanueva

KALIBO, Aklan, January 25 (PIA6) -- An official of the National Food Authority (NFA) urged socio-civic groups in Aklan to use Iron Fortified Rice (I-Rice) in the conduct feeding program for less privilege kids.

NFA-Aklan Provincial Manager Procopio B. Trabajo II said this would ensure that the children will not be deficient in iron, while encouraging demand for I-Rice in Aklan communities.

Saying that Region 6 has a high incidence of iron deficiency, Trabajo also called on government agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to help sustain the use of I-Rice in their school-based feeding programs.

“We are also seeking the support of Aklan’s local government units in our advocacy for I-Rice,” Trabajo said.

I-Rice is sold at the same price as unfortified NFA rice in the market, according to Trabajo.

The fortification of rice with iron, an essential trace mineral that is needed for hemoglobin formation, is mandated under RA 8976 or the Food Fortification Law.

Under the law, other foods for fortification are wheat flour, refined sugar, cooking oil and other staple foods required by the National Nutrition Council (NNC). (JCM/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
