Aklan PDRRMC pushes evacuation, not rescue during calamitiesby Venus G. Villanueva
KALIBO, Aklan, Jan. 28 (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) here is putting more emphasis on evacuating people during calamities rather than waiting for the calamity to happen and conduct rescue operations.
Galo Ibardolaza, PDRRMC-Aklan executive officer, said this is the main thrust of the province’s disaster response program, which is putting more weight on prevention, rather than cure, during disaster situations.
Ibardolaza said the provincial government of Aklan is continuously undertaking disaster preparedness campaigns and other related activities to educate people and to inform them on what to do during disasters through seminars, trainings, orientations and drills.
“We have conducted these activities in schools, local government units, banks, business establishments and other requesting organizations as part of our awareness campaign to prevent damages to lives and properties during disasters,” Ibardolaza said during the Governor’s Report program aired over a cable television channel here as one of the resource speakers.
Besides the orientation and seminars, Ibardolaza said the PDRRMC is also conducting capability and skills trainings to LGUs so that respective municipal councils will be more competent in conducting evacuation and rescue activities during disasters.(JSC/VGV-PIA 6 Aklan)
