NFA hopes to procure 175,000 bags of palay in 2012

SAN JOSE, Antique, Jan. 30 (PIA6) -- The National Food Authority hopes to procure 175,000 bags of palay in 2012 for the province of Antique.

Information Officer Gazelle Jamandron in an interview said that NFA Antique is optimistic to reach the target procurement for palay to serve as buffer stocks for the Antiqueños during lean months and for other NFA warehouses in other parts of the country if needed.

Palay procurement is ongoing for both San Jose and Culasi warehouses; however, the bulk of the procurement is in Culasi where harvest of the third cropping is at its peak.

NFA still buys at P17.00 per kilo palay dried with a moisture content of 14 percent as required for proper storage. Farmers Associations or cooperatives still get an additional incentive fee of 3 cents, another 2 cents for drying and additional 2 cents delivery fee. Drying and delivery fees are given to both individual farmers or associations.

Meanwhile, as of January 23, 2012 NFA reported that the province has a buffer stock of 478,564 bags of rice, enough to last for 99.70 days.

NFA Antique alone has 122,937 bags of NFA rice. The rest are commercial and household stocks.

Though Antique is a surplus province in terms of rice production, NFA Antique under the leadership of its manager Hedy Jardeleza continues to advocate for rice conservation in all levels, in the farm for post harvest processing, at the households and even at the storage. (JSC/MLG/PSM-PIA6 Antique)
