Calibo SIQUIJOR, Jan. 13 (PIA) -- More Siquijodnon devotees each year join the world in celebrating the feast of Sto. Nino as ten of the 134 barangays in the province mark the feasts with grand preparations and festivities either as their “Segunda Devoto” or main fiesta celebration. Among the barangays celebrating the feasts are Cang-alwang, Pasihagon, Tongo, Tinago, and Caticugan of Siquijor town; Cangbagsa and Canlasog of Larena town; Tulapos, Poblacion and Parian of Enrique Villanueva; and Minalulan and Saguing of Maria town. The local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and some households of Helen, Larena and Siquijor are celebrating the feast at the town's Palingkod Hills. Smaller versions of the Sinulog Festival are also held in some of these barangays with devotees joining the street parade, dances and contests in honor of and thanksgiving to the Sto. Nino. The Sinulog is an annual festival held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City in honor of the child Jesus, known as the Santo Niño (Holy Child). The festival features a street parade with participants in brightly colored costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs. Cebu’s Sinulog Festival has been promoted as a tourist attraction, with a contest featuring contingents from various parts of the country. The Santo Nino fervor is equally alive in other towns and barangays in Central Visayas including Siquijor province. (mbcn/rac/PIA-Siquijor) |
