Latest floods destroy P50 million in irrigation structures- NIA

by Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon, Jan. 4 (PIA) -- Six main irrigation structures estimated at over P52 million were in total wreck after the Pulangui River burst its banks following heavy rains that submerged twelve villages in Valencia City recently, barely a week after tropical storm ‘Sendong’ hit the area.

Engr. Jimmy Apostol, Division Manager, National Irrigation Administration (NIA), said, the rampaging floodwaters destroyed the grouted riprap at the bridge’s abutment including the huge siphon that draws off water from the river for distribution to vast rice fields in barangay San Isidro, here.

He said several structures destroyed include two (2) spur dikes along Pulangui River and the embankment of the reuse dam in barangay Batangan.

“Even the 60-meter irrigation canal that serves 950 hectares of rice fields in Nabag-o and San Isidro barangays was not spared,” Apostol said.

As an agricultural backbone in the province, Valencia village farmers expected a plentiful harvest this season but their hopes have been dashed by the raging floods.

Mayor Leandro Jose Catarata, in an interview, said the city government of Valencia is now closely coordinating with NIA on how to address the farmers’ plight and provide them enough farm water to start planting afresh after the heavy rains subside, since they had invested all they had on the farms.

“NIA has proposed construction of a diversion canal, but since the need is urgent, they were able to procure three (3) water pumps that could serve 600 hectares of rice fields,” Catarata said.

Apostol, likewise, said the Mayor is considering NIA’s proposal of constructing diversion canal to temporarily cater to the farmers’ needs. (PIA 10, Bukidnon)
