Koronadal LGU pushes promotion of river trekking site

by Dani Doguiles

KORONADAL CITY, Jan 1 (PIA) -- Koronadal City's local government unit is setting its eyes on turning what it calls a "hidden treasure" into a major tourist destination.

But before opening this natural treasure -- Siok Extreme River Trekking Adventure site -- to the public, it wants to make sure the area is protected and sustained.

Augustus Bretana, city environment and natural resources officer, said they are now considering establishing a comprehensive development plan for the river trekking site.

He said before the site is opened to nature enthusiasts, adventure tourist and curious public, concrete plan for its development and protection as well as regulations should have been put in place.

Social, environmental, peace and order as well as rehabilitation concerns should also be made clear.

Other basic information that should be incorporated in the plan, Bretana said, include delineation of land uses, local protected area, spring resources rehabilitation and protection, and inventory of the flora and fauna in the place.

The river trekking adventure site is situated in Sitio Siok, Barangay Mabini, less than ten kilometers from the city center.

It features a waterfall and several water cascades against a backdrop of verdant cover. The river's crystal clear water come from several natural springs.

The location also offers several sites for camping.

It was formally introduced to mountaineering and river trekking enthusiasts during the Hinugyaw Festival last year.

Those who have experienced the trek described it as comparable to major river trekking sites in other parts of the country. (PIA 12)
