DPWH assures completion of high impact tourism projects in Siargao Island

    SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Jan. 31 (PIA) -- In support of the government’s thrust in developing the tourism industry through provision of quality infrastructure facilities leading to major tourist hubs in the country, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) assured the completion of high impact tourism projects in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte which recently ranked 8th in CNN:Go’s Top 50 World’s Best Surf Spot.
    Among the high impact projects are the concreting of Junction Osmeña-Pilar road (P155.3 million), Junction Del Carmen-Sta. Monica-San Isidro road (P152.4 million) Dapa-Union-General Luna road (P137.4 million), Junction Cancohoy-Pilar road (46.4 million), and Socorro-Nueva Estrella-Pamosaingan road (P23 million). (+)

    Lilia T. Alabat, married, with three children, and currently residing at the Holy Redeemer here did not realize nor dream enough for her tent to be extended. But her single step pushed her later to “a thousand miles” of opportunity in clinching a job of her dream.
    Lilia’s parents had no grand foresight of sending her beyond high school; they just contended that “anyway, you will just get married later, so a high school diploma would be fitting and enough for you.” (+)

Feature: Yacon juice and tea

    Yacon juice and tea are beverages developed from Smallanthus sonchifolius or more popularly known as yacon.
    According to the Food and Nutrition Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), Yacon is associated with gut health. It is rich in fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic stimulating the growth of good bacteria which enhances mineral absorption. FOS is a non-digestible form of carbohydrates that lowers blood sugar levels and improves the health of the intestines. Its benefits are not fully maximized because yacon tubers are perishable and its nutritional content and FOS significantly decreases during post harvest storage. (+)

Feature: VCO has no cholesterol content according to FNRI-DOST

    According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology, virgin coconut oil (VCO) is made up mostly of medium-chain saturated fatty acid with zero trans-fatty acid.
    Trans-fatty acids in fats and oils have been found to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease. It was made a mandatory component at the USDA Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (US NLEA) and Canada last January, 2003. (+)

Feature: Coconut sugar and syrup are promising alternative sweeteners

    Coconut sap, the fluid from coconut flowers that are cut systematically, can be turned into sugar.
    According to the Glycemic Index of Commonly Consumed Carbohydrate Foods in the Philippines, a book published in 2011 by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science (or FNRI-DOST), the resulting sugar has a low glycemic index. (+)

    Thirteen fruits studied by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (or FNRI- DOST) were found to have low Glycemic Index (GI)
    GI is a number representing the increase in the level of blood glucose when we eat food with carbohydrates. Saba banana, seedless grapes, Chinese pears, cantaloupe, watermelon, jackfruit, ripe carabao mango, papaya, red apple, guava and avocado have low GI. However, lakatan banana, pineapple and raisins have medium GI. (+)
